What is Open Content?


The movement toward open content reflects a growing shift in the way academics in many parts of the world are conceptualizing education to a view that is more about the process of learning than the information conveyed in their courses. Information is everywhere; the challenge is to make effective use of it. Part of the appeal of open content is that it is also a response to both the rising costs of traditionally published resources and the lack of educational resources in some regions, and a cost-effective alternative to textbooks and other materials. As customizable educational content is made increasingly available for free over the Internet, students are learning not only the material, but also skills related to finding, evaluating, interpreting, and repurposing the resources they are studying in partnership with their teachers.

(1) How might this technology be relevant to the educational sector you know best?

  • open sharing has global benefits - it's not just about making a teacher's or student's life more productive, but it's also about building and expanding on the available pool of tools, knowledge, content, and experiences. I see that Open Content can empower and make learning more authentic and more robust - perhaps raising 'standards' (the holy grail for some) in a natural human collaborative way.   • The development of open content is an important contribution in order to expand and open up the traditional textbook paradigm and its monopoly as the preferred category of learning resources.   • OER initiatives are desperately required in the schools sector. Accessing resources produced by commercial publishers should not be the only model for information provision in schools. The MIT High School initiative is a good start. Underpinning approaches to OER are ways of teaching - moving from the provision of information to the creation of knowledge by students. OER pushes educators to think about how to use resources in ways that are not didactic. It is also a way of enabling students to operate in globalised ways (in the best sense). And it has implications for pre-service teacher education and professional development.   • Open content is also linked to open source, as new technologies and new information are created as a result. Open content does not just exist to provide educational content, it also exists to provide learning in open with source in a variety of authentic and globally relevant situations. - judy.oconnell judy.oconnell

  • Links to humans - ie OER implies a different model of education than simply transmission of information. It frames education as socially-constructed and therefore dynamic. Educators understanding that information and technologies are both socially constructed is important so that there is an understanding and an acceptance that things will change and that the veracity of OER materials have to be checked. Taking a socially-critical view to teaching and learning is required so that OER are included into classroom practices in meaningful ways. (3) What do you see as the potential impact of this technology on teaching, learning, or creative expression?

  • I don't think you should ignore the powerhouses of Open Source software and Open Content as combined forces. This is the true value of Open Content - to learn at point of need, and do as situations emerge. That takes us beyond schooling to learning for life and creating things or making products to benefit the world. There is no doubt in my mind that an Open Source ethos is the best way to collaborate, create, share, and be empowered to inspire future learning. For example, during the crisis in Haiti, the Open Source community did amazing work in Haiti OpenStreetMap to assist aid and rescue workers to do their work and help the relief and reconstruction effort by creating up-to-date maps of Port au Prince. Dozens of mappers and developers were able to lend a hand, coordinating on the OSM Haiti WikiProject. The development of the Eyewriter is another inspirational example. So Open Content is great - but it's not the full part of the story. - judy.oconnell judy.oconnell Feb 6, 2010
  • The potential impact of Open Content is firstly related to Open Content as a driver for a culture of sharing in schools, a concept that so far mostly has proved to be more rhetoric than practice.   • It has the capacity to contribute to a paradigm shift in K-12 education. Together OER and open source software in the hands of technically-capable teachers and students, has the capacity to position students as creators rather than only consumers of education. OER and open source software initiatives in schools also has the capacity to reframe the extent of influence of large multi-nationals and open up education to more choice. Thinking about programming as a language necessary for all students in 21stC would assist to breakdown barriers put up about students not wanting to learn how computers work. Computers are the intermediary between people and the world at large - knowing how to make them work is therefore fundamental if we are to put young people into the 'driving seat'.
